PHILOSOPHICAL PONDERINGS

AN EXHIBITON OF WZG'S MODERN SCULPTUREAN

With respect to Chinese traditional sculpture WZG¡¯s works reflect a deeply honed understanding and an expansion and development of the language of sculptural art. They possess the completely natural quality and talented techniques of the sculpture of the Han Dynasty, simultaneously having absorbed the line style of the carved tiles of folk art as well as its ornamental techniques. On plain stone and wood he has sculpted simple and vigorous sculptures rich in ornamental and symbolic meaning.

His works are replete with ¡®philosophical ponderings¡¯ and attractive patterns. At the same time between the second and third dimension he gives full play to his own mind and achieves great unity. All the details, dot, line and surface, are entirely transferred into the substance. In his complete penetration into his themes he concentrates on the basic stuff of life. On cold heights and in the midst of loneliness he leads and touches off searches into questions of the human mind. In the vastness between Heaven and Earth he has set up totem after totem. In the cacophonous and confused emotional atmosphere of present-day life his works lead people to a clear and empty state. Faced with such beautiful creations we attain a purified mood.

His works have transcended the habitual verticality of ordinary compositional thinking in wood sculpture. In opposition to the ordinary strictures he has created in his horizontal compositions a ¡®boat of life¡¯ and has designed a vehicle of spirit and life. Each piece can stand as an independent example. And moreover, they fit intoinstallations in the exhibition style of the present-day art scene. In their rectangular style, and in the sequential organization of their different styles of visual expression they give people different feelings and stimulate different verbal responses.
